Bluegill
Lepomis macrochirus
A deep-bodied sunfish with a compact mouth and a dark extension at the edge of the gill cover.
Habitat
Lakes, ponds, reservoirs and sluggish streams, commonly near weed beds.
Habitat supports a shortlist; it does not prove an identity. Water bodies change seasonally, and introduced populations may occur outside the best-known native setting.
Range
Native through much of central and eastern North America from Canada to northern Mexico; widely introduced.
Check a current state, provincial or national fisheries record before making a high-confidence range claim. Drainage boundaries are more informative than political borders.
Compare carefully
Several sunfish share a deep profile. The opercular flap, fin-edge color and mouth size should be reviewed together.
When a decisive structure is hidden, record the observation as probable or unresolved. An honest uncertainty is more useful than a precise label built from incomplete evidence.
Responsible observation
Capture the entire gill cover and pectoral fin against the body; wet scales can shift from olive to vivid blue.
For a live fish, prepare the camera first, use wet hands when handling is unavoidable, support the body and return it promptly according to local rules.
