Freshwater observation starts with local rules, careful handling and respect for habitat. A useful record never requires avoidable harm.

Check local rules

Licences, protected populations, closed areas, seasons, gear and release requirements vary by jurisdiction and water body. Find the responsible agency before the visit.

Keep contact brief

For fish that will be released, prepare tools and the camera before handling. Keep the fish wet, supported and out of the air for as little time as possible.

Protect habitat

Avoid trampling spawning areas or bankside vegetation. Pack out line and litter, and keep chemicals, soap and food waste away from the water.

Limit location sharing

Precise coordinates can expose sensitive species, small populations and spawning sites. Share detail only with an appropriate authority or trusted research channel.

Clean, drain and dry

Follow local biosecurity guidance for boats, footwear, nets and equipment to reduce the movement of aquatic organisms between waters.

Report uncertainty

Separate confirmed, probable and unresolved observations. A cautious label prevents a weak record from becoming a repeated claim.
