Photograph relationships
A fin count is difficult when rays overlap, so begin with the position, separation and outline of each fin. Include the fin base and the body around it.
Side markings should be described by direction and repetition: vertical bars, a horizontal band, pale spots on dark ground or dark spots on light ground.
Expect variation
Age, breeding condition, water clarity, stress and camera processing can all alter apparent saturation. Shape and placement usually survive those changes better than hue.
If fins are folded, the image may remain useful for a shortlist but should not carry a confident species label.
